The Lebanese National Consultative Committee on Ethics (LNCCE) is an independent, multidisciplinary and pluralist committee created on May 15, 2001 by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (Decree No. 63 / 2001). Its mission is to provide advice on ethical and social issues raised by the progress of knowledge in the fields of biology, medicine and health.

The LNCCE Board includes a President who leads the work of the Committee, a Vice-President who replaces the President in the absence of the latter, a Secretary General who coordinates the daily work of the Committee and oversees its activities and promotion, and 20 members- all of them appointed by the Prime Minister.

Assaad Rizk, MD, FACS, is an Honorary Professor of Urology at the Faculty of Medicine, Saint Joseph University, Beirut. He is a founding member of the CCNLE/LNCCE and currently its Vice President. He was nominated member of the Lebanese Government three times as Minister from 1976 to 1979, from 1992 to 1995 and in 2005. He is currently retired; his professional activity was in General and Urology Surgery at Rizk Hospital from 1959 to 2009.
He was the General Director/President of the Board of this Hospital from 1961 to 2009.
He has many scientific publications and has presented more than fifteen International lectures as invited speaker in international congresses. He has received foreign decorations; Italian: Ordre du Mérite in 1970, French: Légion d’Honneur in 1980.
He is mainly interested in Medical Education, Hospital Administration, Organ Transplantations and Bioethics.

Michel Daher, MD, FACS, is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Balamand, Lebanon.
He is a Graduate of the University Paul Sabatier- Toulouse- France, and hold a French Board of General Surgery from this same university.
He is currently the President of the Lebanese Cancer Society (LCS), and Director of the Medical Ethics and Bioethics Teaching Program at the University of Balamand.
His professional activity is in General and Colorectal Surgery at Saint Georges Hospital- UMC, Beirut, Lebanon.
He is a former Secretary General of the Lebanese Order of Physicians, a former President of the Lebanese Society for General Surgery, and currently Associate Editor of the Lebanese Medical Journal.
He has more than 110 scientific publications and presented more than 80 international lectures as invited speaker in international congresses. Many of these publications and conferences address Ethics and Bioethics issues.
He has received an Award of Appreciation from the American Cancer Society for his commitment to the global control of cancer.
He is mainly interested in Cancer Control, Palliative Care, Breast Cancer management, Colorectal Surgery, and Medical Ethics and Bioethics Education.

Pr. Georges Aftimos is a Professor of Pathological Anatomy at the Saint Joseph University and Lebanese University since 1990.
He is also Medical Director at the Institut National de Pathologie- a medical center of grouping specialists in anatomical and cytological pathology.
Pr. Aftimos completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Medicine Saint Joseph University in 1973. He then graduated in 1976 from Université Paris VI with a CES d’Anatomie-Pathologique Humaine Diploma in 1976.

Thalia Arawi is the Founding Director of the Salim El-Hoss Bioethics & Professionalism Program at the American University Beirut Faculty of Medicine and Medical Center. Christine joined the Lebanese American University in 2011 to take the lead in creating the overall infrastructure for the oversight, review and compliance of research involving human participants at the university and the LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital. She established the IRB Office and is responsible for managing the office as well as providing the necessary education and training to re-enforce the role of the IRB and the ethical guidelines required for the conduct of research involving human participants.
Christine holds an Honors Degree from York University, Canada in Experimental Animal Biology. She further continued her studies in Clinical Research Management. She is also a Certified Clinical Research Associate and Certified IRB Manager.
Christine has extensive experience in research ethics and in the regulatory infrastructure governing research within North America and the Middle East. Before joining LAU, she took various roles and excelled as a clinical research professional at Janssen Ortho Canada, Merck Sharpe and Dohme ME, American University of Beirut, Harvard Medical School Dubai Center and Dubai Healthcare City. Nasri Antoine DIAB is a lawyer at the Bar of Beirut and at the Bar of Paris, and a Professor of law. He holds a PhD of Law from Université Panthéon-Assas - Paris 2; a Master of Laws (LLM) from Georgetown University; a Post-graduate diploma in Business Administration from Université Libre de Bruxelles - Solvay; a Post-graduate degree (DEA) in Private Law as well as two Masters in Private Law and in Public Law from Université Saint-Joseph.
He is currently member of the Medical Ethics Committee of Hôtel-Dieu de France; president of the Scientific Committee of the Beirut Bar Law Review “Al Adl”; member of the Legal Commission of the Association of Banks in Lebanon; and president of the Scientific Committee of the Lebanese Association for Taxpayers’ Rights (ALDIC). Dr. Pierre Zalloua, a Professor of Genetics, he was appointed Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at the Lebanese American University (LAU) on October 1, 2013. Prior to that he was the Dean of the School of Pharmacy from October 2010 to September 2013 and Assistant Dean for Research at the School of Medicine since 2007. Dr. Zalloua is also an adjunct Professor of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.
An accomplished geneticist, writer and lecturer, Dr. Zalloua is a leading authority on the genetics of complex diseases in and among Middle Eastern populations.
Dr. Zalloua graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1987 with a B.S. in Biology. He earned his M.A. in Biological Sciences from San Jose State University in 1990, and his Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of California, Davis in 1996.
He completed research fellowships in genetics at the University of California, Davis (1996–1997), in molecular biology at Applied Biosystems (1997–1998), and in population genetics (1998–2001) at the Harvard School of Public Health. He was an Assistant Professor, and then Associate Professor in the school of medicine at the American University of Beirut between 2003 and 2007.

H.E. Mr. Marwan Hamadé started his career as a journalist and columnist, Deputy Editor in Chief of “L’Orient-Le Jour” (1971-1975), Director of the Press Group “An-Nahar” (1977-1980). He was elected Deputy of Mount Lebanon since 1991. He held a number of portfolios: Minister of Tourism (1980-1982) Minister of Health and Social Affairs three times (1992-1997), Minister of the Displaced (2000-2003) Minister of Economy and Trade (1990-1992) and (2003-2004), Minister of Telecommunications (2005-2008). He is Secretary General of the Parliament’s bureau and Chairman of the Environment Parliamentary Commission since 2009. Dr. Tarek Mitri is the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Libya. From 2005-2011, he served in four successive Lebanese governments as Minister of Environment, Adminstrative Reform, Culture, Information and acting Minister of Foreign Affairs.
He worked, in various capacities, in the area of intercultural and interreligious dialogue and taught at Saint Joseph University, Balamand University, the University of Geneva, Amsterdam Free University, Harvard University and the American University of Beirut.
He chairs the Boards of Trustees of the Institute of Palestine Studies and Nicolas Sursok Museum and is a member of the Strategic Council of Saint Joseph University and of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies.
He authored a number of books, studies and articles on interreligious and intercultural dialogue as well as the history of Christian-Muslim Relations.
He holds a doctorate in political science from the University of Paris-X, after completing a Master Degree in Philosophy at the American University of Beirut.
Born in Tripoli 1950 and married to Elyane Comaty, with two children: Dalya and Ziyad.
